Tuvalu<\/b>\u00a0(\/t<\/span>u\u02d0<\/span>\u02c8<\/span>v<\/span>\u0251\u02d0<\/span>l<\/span>u\u02d0<\/span>\/<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(\"About<\/a>\u00a0listen<\/a><\/span><\/span>)<\/small><\/span>\u00a0too-VAH-loo<\/i><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0\/\u02c8<\/span>t<\/span>u\u02d0<\/span>v<\/span>\u0259<\/span>l<\/span>u\u02d0<\/span>\/<\/a><\/span><\/span>\u00a0TOO-v\u0259-loo<\/i><\/a>), formerly known as the\u00a0Ellice Islands<\/b>, is a\u00a0Polynesian<\/a>\u00a0island nation<\/a>\u00a0located in the Pacific Ocean, about midway between\u00a0Hawaii<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Australia<\/a>, lying east-northeast of the\u00a0Santa Cruz Islands<\/a>\u00a0(belonging to the\u00a0Solomons<\/a>), southeast of\u00a0Nauru<\/a>, south of\u00a0Kiribati<\/a>, west of\u00a0Tokelau<\/a>, northwest of\u00a0Samoa<\/a>and\u00a0Wallis and Futuna<\/a>\u00a0and north of\u00a0Fiji<\/a>. It comprises three\u00a0reef<\/a>\u00a0islands and six true\u00a0atolls<\/a>\u00a0spread out between the\u00a0latitude<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a05\u00b0<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a010\u00b0 south<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0longitude<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0176\u00b0<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0180\u00b0<\/a>, west of the\u00a0International Date Line<\/a>. Tuvalu has a population of 10,640 (2012 census).[1]<\/a><\/sup>[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Situated in\u00a0Oceania<\/a>, the total land area of the islands of Tuvalu is 26 square kilometres (10\u00a0sq\u00a0mi).<\/p>\n

The first inhabitants of Tuvalu were\u00a0Polynesians<\/a>. The pattern of settlement that is believed to have occurred is that the Polynesians spread out from\u00a0Samoa<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Tonga<\/a>\u00a0into the Tuvaluan atolls, with Tuvalu providing a stepping stone to migration into the\u00a0Polynesian Outlier communities<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Melanesia<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Micronesia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 1568, Spanish navigator\u00a0\u00c1lvaro de Menda\u00f1a<\/a>\u00a0was the first European to sail through the archipelago, sighting the island of\u00a0Nui<\/a>\u00a0during his expedition in search of\u00a0Terra Australis<\/a>. In 1819 the island of\u00a0Funafuti<\/a>\u00a0was named Ellice’s Island; the name Ellice was applied to all nine islands after the work of English hydrographer\u00a0Alexander George Findlay<\/a>. The Ellice Islands came under Great Britain’s sphere of influence in the late 19th century as the result of a treaty between Great Britain and Germany relating to the demarcation of the spheres of influence in the Pacific Ocean.[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Each of the Ellice Islands was declared a\u00a0British Protectorate<\/a>\u00a0by Captain Gibson of\u00a0HMS\u00a0Curacoa<\/i><\/a>\u00a0between 9 and 16 October 1892. The Ellice Islands were administered as British protectorate by a\u00a0Resident Commissioner<\/a>\u00a0from 1892 to 1916 as part of the\u00a0British Western Pacific Territories<\/a>\u00a0(BWPT), and then as part of the\u00a0Gilbert and Ellice Islands<\/a>\u00a0colony from 1916 to 1976.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0referendum was held in December 1974<\/a>\u00a0to determine whether the Gilbert Islands and Ellice Islands should each have their own administration. As a consequence of the referendum, the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony ceased to exist on 1 January 1976 and the separate British colonies of\u00a0Kiribati<\/a>\u00a0and Tuvalu came into existence. Tuvalu became fully independent within the\u00a0Commonwealth<\/a>\u00a0on 1 October 1978.
